What can you use your skip for?

There are restrictions however on what you can and can’t put in a skip. Different companies have individual guidelines on what is allowed but typically hazardous or combustible items such as  asbestos, fridges, freezers, batteries and tyres would be restricted. What can’t you use your skip for?

Paint, Solvents, and Fuels

These combustible items should be disposed off safely through a licensed disposal centre. Placing these items in a skip could cause serious injury to humans and wildlife through chemical burns or inhalation.

Medical Waste

Biological waste, bodily fluids, medical equipment pointed (needles) or potentially contaminated items must not be put in a skip. This type of waste poses an extreme risk of infection to all who come into contact with it. You can find out more about how to dispose of medical waste properly through the Department of Health.

Batteries

We’re taught from a young age to not throw batteries in the bin and the same goes for a skip, no matter the size of a battery. Batteries contain lead and other harmful substances which need to be disposed of properly as they can potentially cause severe injury. There are lots of  convenient places to recycle your batteries such as supermarkets and petrol stations, find your nearest centre here.

Electrical Appliances and Equipment

Any electrical good – something that uses a battery or has a plug, isn’t allowed in a skip though these seem to be the most common things people try to throw away. Unfortunately they can be hazardous and need to be recycled properly through a specialist electrical recycling point. Click here to find your nearest electrics recycling point.

Mattresses

There are a huge number of ways to get rid of a bulky mattress. Take a look at this Which? article for some ideas. If you would like us to dispose of our mattress, you must inform us prior to booking if you intend to place a mattress in your skip, simply call us to talk through your needs on 01753 720074.

Asbestos

Asbestos is extremely hazardous and increase a persons chance of developing cancer, lung disease or other illnesses. Needless to say  you can’t throws Asbestos in a skip as it needs to be handled carefully and removed by specialists.

Gas Cylinders

Gas cylinders will contain flammable and combustible residue which could pose a serious risk. They need to be disposed of at a specialist centre and most gas suppliers will reuse and recycle them.

Tyres & Other Items

Pre-2007 Wood Waste

The Environmental Agency will begin classifying some pre-2007 construction wood components, such as barge boards, fascias, soffits, windows, doors and roof timbers, as hazardous waste on September 1, 2023. Note that all skip companies must adhere to the prohibition against placing this waste in skips.

Armchairs, Sofas, and Other Upholstered Furniture

Furniture harbouring dangerous pollutants will be subject to new POP (Persistent Organic Pollutants) laws beginning January 1, 2023. Items that are intact, such as couches and office chairs, require additional processing.
